| Living in harmony
with nature |
| Life at The Tongsai Bay revolves around “living
in harmony with nature”. The hotel abounds with breathtaking
views of the Gulf of Thailand and is embraced by lush tropical
gardens and a peaceful beach. |
 |
|
 |
| The hotel’s activities
and recreational pursuits are conducive to environmental conservation,
providing guests with non-motorised water sport activities,
such as sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and snorkeling equipment.
Any motorized water sports are strictly forbidden. In
an effort to preserve the island’s natural environment, The
Tongsai Bay implemented a conservation effort known as The
Green Project with the objective of maintaining a balance
between human beings, flora and fauna. Some of the Green Project’s
practices include: |
Waste
management |
| Waste can be divided into two main groups –
biodegradable and non-biodegradable – which require different
kinds of management. At Tongsai Bay, different colour garbage
bags are used. Subsequently, the sorted garbage is sent to the
garbage management plant. The staff there, separate the garbage
again so that it can be properly processed, as follows: |
 |
- Natural waste (leftover food, dry leaves,
cut grass from garden) is sent to the Fertiliser House to
make organic fertilizer to grow the hotel’s own organic
herbs and vegetables.
- Leftover food is sent to the Fertiliser
House to make organic fertilizer (together with natural
waste). Part of it is also sent to a pig farm.
- Non-recyclable waste is sent to the municipality
to be burnt (e.g. tissues, cigarette butts, packaging).
- Coloured garbage bags are sent to be recycled.
- Hazardous waste is sent to Genco to be properly
disposed of.
|
| Furthermore, the hotel uses various means to
reduce waste, including using cloth bags (as opposed to plastic),
rechargeable batteries, recycled paper and ceramic bottles for
shampoo and shower gel. In addition, the hotel has tried to
substitute chemical based products with natural extract products,
such as using organic fertilizer as well as organic washing
liquid and detergent. |

natural waste from the hotel’s kitchen and ground dry leaves.
Organic garden offering herbs, vegetables, and flowers for hotel
use.
Substituting guest amenities with more
bio-degradable packaging.
Cloth bags are used instead of plastic
bags and garbage is segregated in the staff quarters. |
| |
| Animal and plant conservation |
| The Tongsai Bay has a policy not to harm animals,
cut trees or use chemicals in the hotel’s outdoor areas. Moreover,
the hotel set up an Animal Rescue Team to protect animals living
in the hotel’s vicinity and investigate situations involving
animal injuries and deaths. In addition, strict regulations
on animals and plants are imposed on the hotel’s entire staff. |
 |
|
Stickers put on windows to prevent
bird injuries and snakes are caught using special tools instead
of killing. |
 |
| Environmental campaign for the staff |
In additional to conducting
environmental campaigns and publicizing the Green Project
on the staff notice board, a number of other environmental
activities have been organized by the hotel to increase
environmental awareness among staff. These include outings
such as those that were organized to Kanchanaburi in 2003,
and Kao Yai and Kao Pang Ma in 2005. The hotel also organizes
environmental orientation courses for both old and new
staff.
Thanks to its solid commitment to preserving the environment,
The Tongsai Bay received the Great Initiatives For Today’s
(Tomorrow’s) Society (GIFFTTS) award from the Preferred
Hotel Group and Green Planet Award from Kuoni Switzerland
in 2006.
